Penny Lane was once the home ground to the Liverpool School Boys FC. In 1998 when the school boys left the ground to take up residence at Walton hall Park, the ground was left as an eyesore for the local community.
After Penny Lane Development Trust was built, we plan to use the field more often for football events such as this, the Invitation Challenge Cup. The community events will demonstrate competitive football in a friendly environment.
The Invitation Challenge Cup Final 2011 was watched by a healthy crowd of mainly local people who witnessed Penny Lane Select emerge as victors over a full strength Mossley Hill AFC first team.
Played in superb spirit on the much loved former home of the all conquering Liverpool School Boys. The game was finely balanced at 6-5 to Penny Lane Select but upon entering the last fifteen minutes, the hosts added five more goals to end the game 11-6 thus going on to receive the champions shield.
Former four times champion with the Liverpool School Boys, William Duncan who played in 1955-56 traveled down to watch the game and present the medals and shield to the teams.
William said it has been a memorable day for me to be back on the Penny Lane fields and to be able to witness such a fantastic game.
Everyone at the Penny Lane Development Trust would like to thank both teams for taking part in this inaugural Invitation Challenge Cup. It is the first time competitive football has been played on the field for many years. It is hoped we can hold an annual event and not only raise funds for this wonderful charity, but give many young men the chance to grace these famous fields on Penny Lane.
